“I am an Artist, I talk Art”

“I am an Artist, I talk Art”
19th July 2020
Being interview, videoing and sitting in-front of a few cameras made me nervous and not able to talk properly. MY GOSH!!!! It took me a long while to accept the way I look and how I speak .
I would prefer to be at the back stage actually, but I also understand that I must learn to talk and share more about what I am doing as an artist and my involvement with the charity art project Colors of Cambodia ~ “art will safe the world”! My heartfelt thanks to April Chin , Andy Chow, Yuen James, Irene Wan, and Rekha Menon , for their dedication in the collaborationist “I am Artist, I talk Art”.

And, and and.... thousands times of thank you for the precious time, efforts, guidance and patience given to me throughout the whole interview sessions. I am grateful for the platform and promoting via this wonderful ways. So, here I am, presenting you a short video of me, interview by Andy Chow from Malaysia Advance Photographer Group (MAPG).
Enjoy .... and then oh.....Please LIKE, SHARE, SUBCRIBE the YouTube to help spreading the good word and love of arts.

Consciousness and Subconsciousness

New watercolours in progress!
Let’s see how it goes and what will evoke between the consciousness and subconscious! With the thinking of movements, form and colours and the combination of inner silence, the wakefulness and mindfulness that may heighten and the opening of the heart that may cultivate......
The forces of reckoning between who we are, who we think we are, and who we actually could be....is still strong, and deep in my heart.
Arts has the eternal truth.......

Self Portrait

I think the self is fascinating, to discover this body that we are carrying since the day we were born. The continuing changes on the body that we are “using” everyday, the breaths that take into the body keep the life continue...thinking that responses to all that happens in life....feelings that could bring suffering and happiness...all this happens in the body of every one, no one can escape except we no longer can breath.
I have been asking myself who am I for years.....What is the purpose of being a human being? Why I was born as a human not animals or others? The path of seeking deeper understanding of this inward beings in variety ways has been a long journey but it eventually leads me to who I am today.
The process of making self portrait is the experience of me relating myself to the rest of the world. There are times I think how would I like to be remembered for? What have life really bring to me? What is best qualities in myself? Creativity does help me in finding my way back to what I already know, already are, always have been, and always will be.
I am aware of the changes and transformations in life, some times the changes can be really challenging and painful but this is a real life lessons and it is important to reflect on experiences and how they affect one’s self.
Life moves on and so should we....
These self portraits did in 2017 represent and perpetuate of own personal mythologies. For physical and spiritual bodies to shape and embark on the rest of my life journey, is to connect the willing and thinking realms with the rhythm of feeling of these three aspects for well beings.

The discovery of the higher parts of nature in me, understand dharma, walk on right path, giving and receiving that comes only from oneself....which may be discovered and expressed one day, through art.

Smile, there’s Art

Yessss!! 1st of the 3 paintings that will be complete soon.

I enjoy holding the brush, watching the colour, form, movement and element emerge, in which, holding my inner thought and purpose.

I am having the absolute freedom! The awakening of body and soul would ripple across the planet and universe. Yes, Spiritual freedom, that is necessary in art as it is in life... as what Kandinsky mentioned in his Concerning The Spiritual In Art.

There is another beautiful feeling of creating this painting, that is the deeds of loving kindness that serves the purpose.

Divine Lotus

"Divine Lotus"
2020
38cm x 26cm
Watercolour on paper

The Lotus, is symbol of the light of compassion, opens its petals of the heart. Divine fragrance spreads when the petals of the heart unfold....It grows into the full bloom of peaceful contentment, just like my life unfolding and blooming. I find inner strength and beauty as I face hard times and overcome obstacles.
Love, gratitude, compassion and kindness are the cause of all enduring… and it’s a wonderful experience in this fundamental principle of life.
The experiences I had in Siem Reap, Cambodia, in the past ten years have enabled me to practice Metta and to be a better person.
Working with children from underprivileged families, seeing their wish to continue study and their acceptance and tolerance, has awoken me.
The Dalai Lama said, ’Only the development of compassion and understanding for others can bring us tranquillity and the happiness we all seek’. This is what I truly believe, since my connection with Cambodian children.
I paint and create because of the need to express my thoughts and feelings imaginatively, spontaneously and authentically. Over time the gathering of these wonderful experiences leads to emotional fulfilment and to the transformation of the inner self.
We are all so deeply interconnected: to love, to be kind and to do good is what we all should practice in this life time. Life is a circle: just like all flowers, beauty is fleeting so that even the Lotus flower must die. This shows the endless cycle of life, death and rebirth.....
Love is the blossoming of heaven. I find affection and everything I need, and loving kindness is the seed of joy and happiness and the ripples of the kind heart are the highest blessings of the Universe.

"Love for Siem Reap"
2016
60cm x 80.5cm
Acrylic on Canvas

Siem Reap town
still a beauty
but not so innocent or simple
women dressed to kill
high heels
lipstick and eye shadow
sense of materialism
much stronger
young girl, ladies
young boy, men
seeking better life
life, no longer simple as it was
small kids
bare foot, running, singing
education and family
do they have a choice
or live the life just as their parents
do they hope and have dreams
gratitude
internal dialog
awakes
loving kindness
sharing and giving
different ways
Art will save the world
connects
Colors of Cambodia
touched
deeply
part of my life
kind hearted
supports
generous
giving without expectation
loving kindness radiating
love and joy surrounds us
each of us plant a seed
seed of Metta
in ourselves
in others
it will
it should

11th Asian, African and Mediterranean International Exhibition

Hangzhou Hanging Malaysian Artists
by Martin Bradley

A finely selected coterie of Malaysian creatives, including Nanyang trained ink brush master Dr Cheah Thien Soong, USM’s Associate Professor A Rahman Mohamed (from the School of Arts), printmaker Chong Hip Seng, and up-and-coming Malaysian artist Honey Khor, had been invited to show their works in a truly international art exhibition by Luo Qi, Associate Professor of the China Academy of Art, and also a renowned Chinese Modern Artist and art entrepreneur. The 11th Annual Asian, African and Mediterranean International Modern Art Exhibition, was held over five days in the South Eastern Chinese City of Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, famed for its historical connections to Kublai Khan, Marco Polo and Mao Zedong.

This year’s event, hosting artworks from 22 artists, was housed in the new Shang Kun Luo Qi International Museum of Modern Art, which had been purpose built and recently completed by the Shang Kun Construction Co. Ltd, to house displays and exhibitions for the artist/entrepreneur Luo Qi. That private gallery not only forms part of a growing interest in Chinese art investment, but is scheduled to introduce further international art interconnections to the region in the near future. In time, the whole first floor of the privately funded six-storey building, is to be dedicated to the promotion of arts

The prosperous and architecturally advanced city of Hangzhou, its entrepreneurs, the new gallery, and Annual China (Hangzhou) International Micro-Films Festival, had all been backed by some of the city's most illustrious businessmen, including Liu Bin, Board Chairman of Hongmao Holdings, Li Zheng We of Shang Kun Construction Co. Ltd and other significant Hangzhou businessmen, with a very supportive local government and, of course, entrepreneur Luo Qi himself.

As part of a consciously ongoing art initiative, redeveloping the arts in China, the city of Hangzhou welcomed the "International Exhibition", which featured painting and sculpture from countries as diverse as Australia, Reunion Island (in the Indian Ocean), Italy, Mauritius, Thailand, Russia and our very own Malaysia. In a separate meeting within the aforementioned gallery, support was pledged for further annual exhibitions, an expansion of art initiatives, greater international exchanges of artworks within Hangzhou as well as art residencies, with the fortunate artist housed for a month in a freshly constructed six star hotel, due to be opened shortly.

Paintings by A Rahman Mohamed and prints by Chong Hip Seng, from previous international art exhibitions, accompanied those by Reunion Island artist Charly Lesquelin, Italian Marco Cascella and Hangzhou’s Luo Qi, to grace the walls of the N8 Club and continue to form part of a permanent collection within the city of Hangzhou. These excellent examples of modern international artworks were on display at Hangzhou's most exclusive, private, N8 Club where the city's elite revel, drink fine French wines and rest from the pressures of business and entrepreneurship.

NB. The club (N8) is located at the former Nan Ping Club at the lakeside of the West Lake in Hangzhou, and was founded by the Octvillas consortium, hence N8. The club was originally an exclusive swimming club for China’s former premiere, Mao Zedong, but now is a leisure club for the well appointed and their guests. N8 Club is situated close to the scenic views of Leifeng Pagoda and Jingci Temple, while "Ten Views of the West Lake”, "Su Causeway in Spring Dawn", "Leifeng Pagoda in Evening Glow", and "Evening Bell Ringing at Nanping Hill" are close by.

There is little doubt that China, and in this instance Hangzhou in the province of Zhejiang, is heavily invested in arts, including fresh perspectives in modern architecture. China is on the move with art investment. An article in The Guardian, this year, reflected that at least seven world class art auction houses are presently in China, including Poly International, Guardian Auctions, Christies and Sotherby’s, though the two latter operate from Hong Kong as they are not permitted in mainland China. The interest in art, foreign and local, certainly at a fiscal level, is phenomenal in China with art profits reported as doubling annually. The reason; Chinese middle classes are becoming more affluent, with some of that good fortune filtering into the arts. Luo Qi’s university, the China Academy of Art, Hangzhou, will soon be housing a permanent collection of Bauhaus objects and drawings, bought for $72 million in Germany in 2013.

The China Academy of Art, the Shang Kun Luo Qi International Museum of Modern Art, the N8 Club and the continuing Annual Asian, African and Mediterranean International Modern Art Exhibition is good for Hangzhou, good for China, but equally good for Malaysia and its artists. Chinese interest in art from Asia can only serve to prosper Malaysian art within the region, with China rapidly becoming one of the most important players in a global art scene, equal to America and Europe.

Catalonia Summer

Learning about Art History in Malaysia Institute of Art ( 1992-1995) used to be the hardest subject for me. Being poor in English made it much more difficult, I could not understand much when lecturer explained. I even find that it was so tough to read art history book in the past. But, I know, learning is a life time process! I will get there eventually.

Slides presentation by Mr Lok How Yuan during Art History lesson wasn't really appreciate by me at that time in that dark, freezing classroom . So much to remember, so much to learn. But now, I must say: " Thank you, Mr Lok! It was you the one who connected me to this part of world. A world of infinity creation!"

The Persistence of Memory by Salvodor Salvador Dalí, is the painting that stay with my memory since my study in MIA. Dali's style is like photo realism, it make me think. But, I can only "tried" to understand about his feeling, his way of expression and stories in his art. Until, I am there, in Figueres, Cadagues and Port Lligat. Physically stood right in his living room, bed room, balcony and his studio. Looked out from the window....I took a deep breath. I stood still, wide opened my mouth. I recognised the blue sky, the sea, the rock, the bay and the island have been represented in several of Dali's work ~ The Madonna of Port Lligat, Crucifixion (Corpus Hypercubus), and The Sacrament of the Last Supper.

Sunlight came through the glass, shined into Dali's studio, on his brushes, mediums for oil colours just as he left them. I imagined he is here, seating in front of one of his last work, on the pulling system he used for working. It was 1930, dali bought simple shack. This shack has been created to a piece of magnificent art by Dali. Every single part in the house is amazing. Decades, Dali lived and worked until the death of his muse Gala in 1982.

Walked in Dali's home and museum twice in 2 years. It's just more than i can tell. I remember my first travelled to Figueres from Bacelona alone in 2012. Sat in the train, I started my "thinking". "The Thinking" have magically connected me to many beautiful people in Figueres.

The miraculous night that I met Mr Luis Duran, who were so kind and devotion to my sketches; The corner of the street at Duran Hotel & Restaurant where Mr Duran waited for me on the breezing morning; The magical moment I sat in El Celler; A wonderful meeting with gentle and interesting man Joan Vehi, who was photographer and carpenter for Dali; The handsome and creative writer Martí Dacosta who also the owner of Dalícatessen......and the charming, beautiful young adults who enjoyed sketching Sant Pere church with me. I am beholden to the delicate people I met in Catalonia. For what they have done, shared and guided, they had shown me the path, lead me to Dali's footsteps.

Learning Art History in lives was what I looking forward for years. Even though at that moment in time, I was excited, nervous and worry on my "little" adventure in Figueres. But then...deep is my heart, I know that's "The Way". I would never have imaging myself in where Dali painted. The "Catalonia Summer" was one of my dream came true.

I would like to rejoice this happiness to my dear family members, teachers and friends who have supporting me in this "art journey", their supports have determine my path.

Dream of Figueres

Not sure if there is a dream,
It seem so real.
I was so close to him,
reading his story.

Inspired by his great creation,
my inner self.
Still searching of my direction,
in many way.

Learning,
to live the life.
Just like him?
the genius.

Never alone,
it will be colourful
and
meaningful.
